Tell us about your business. How Did the Idea to Become a Hypnotherapist Come About?

I've always been interested in how the mind works, both on a conscious and subconscious level. I have a Masters in Organizational Psychology and I've worked with thousands of clients in my corporate Human Resources and coaching roles. In 2009-2010, I studied meditation with Dr. Deepak Chopra and became a certified Chopra Center meditation teacher. One could say that becoming a hypnotherapist in 2014 just happened, but the truth is that I feel like all of my previous experiences prepared me for this natural progression and expansion of my abilities. Since then, I have also been studying Reiki and shamanism, and I am working on integrating all of these modalities into my practice. I am particularly fascinated by the overlap and similarities between meditation, hypnosis, and shamanic journeying, and how they can all be used to access parts of yourself that are hidden in your subconscious mind.

What Are the Highlights and Low-Lights of Being a Hypnotherapist?

Highlights: seeing the results in my clients and how their lives are transformed. Plus, how much I learn from each client (bonus!). It's interesting how often we attract clients who need to work on something that we also need to work on ourselves.

Lowlights: working with clients who don't have "skin in the game" and are not willing to put in the work but expect results. This is why it's important to screen clients and be comfortable saying "no" if they are not right for you.

What Is Your Favorite Method for Relaxing Your Client? (i.e., Progressive Relaxation, Elman Fractionation etc.)

I love a good progressive relaxation technique. It works like a charm!

What Is Your Special Focus in Hypnotherapy? (i.e., Phobia, Habit, Stress, Coaching) What do you love about it?

I would say beliefs, thoughts, mindset followed closely by habits and behaviors. I have a special interest in working with women, particularly those who are making a career shift and starting their own business (part-time or full-time). I love teaching them how to change their beliefs about themselves, how to eliminate limiting beliefs and behaviors, conquer impostor syndrome, and turn on their abundance mindset in order to achieve extraordinary results in their life and business. I am also a Coach (I graduated from Martha Beck's Wayfinder Coaching Program) and I love coaching both the conscious and subconscious mind through a mix of hypnotherapy and coaching techniques. It's my superpower!

Have You Experienced Burnout? If so, What Methods Do You Use to Spark Your Passion?

I have certainly experienced burnout, and what has worked for me was taking time off, relaxing, doing something completely different, staying away from social media. You have to learn when to say "no" because what you say "no" to is just as important as what you say "yes" to. Ultimately, you have to find what works for you.

If You Started Your Hypnosis Business Again, What Things Would You Do Differently?

I would offer both in-person and online sessions from the beginning. They both work. I would also spend a bit more time learning how to run a business, how to be a true entrepreneur. Also, when you're starting out it's tempting to say "yes" to everything, but I would now ask myself: is this aligned with my long-term vision? Will this bring the results I want in my business? It's important to focus on the 20% of the things/activities that will give you 80% of the desired results. Too many start-up business owners try to do everything (unsuccessfully, I might add), and this usually leads to burnout. I’ve been there, I’ve done that.

What Valuable Advice Would You Give New Hypnotists Starting Out?

Just get started. Progress over perfection! Remember that your own life and career experiences will add to who you are as a hypnotherapist and will help you find your own unique style that will ultimately attract the ideal client to you. Another piece of advice is to find your niche. It might seem easier to target everyone but in reality, when you try to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one. Having a niche will help you stand out. You don't have to have a niche from the get-go (don't use this as an excuse to keep you from getting started), but it's something you should consider in your first 1-2 years of running your business.

What 3 Books Do You Feel Were Instrumental in Your Development as a Hypnotherapist?

For me, it's not so much about picking a handful of books, although there are many that are very insightful and informative. I am grateful for the teachers who have inspired and continue to inspire me (hypnotherapists, coaches, shamanic practitioners, and others), as well as the workshops and programs I have attended. I make a point of taking courses every single year and investing in myself so I can bring my best skills and thinking to the table. I don't think you ever stop learning, and the more you work with clients and teach others, the more you learn from them as well. It's a beautiful symbiotic relationship.
