Our Burning Questions
Tell us about your business. How did the idea to become a hypnotherapist come about?
I had always enjoyed studying psychology and was already certified as a Reiki Master when I decided to explore an additional college degree for further business training and came across hypnotherapy as a choice of specialty in the psychology program I chose. Did you know hypnosis and Reiki are both altered states of consciousness that allow for the same type of release and transformation?
What are the highlights and low-lights of being an Hypnotherapist?
The highlight to me is empowering clients to embrace the experience they've been longing for and to really believe they deserve that experience. I cannot think of much low-light. There is definitely a need for a clear sense of self and clear personal boundaries when working in such a service based position in order to maintain your own balance. If you have those, you will be alright.
What is your favorite method for relaxing your client? (i.e., Progressive Relaxation, Elman Fractionation etc.)
I prefer to use progressive relaxation for most individual's first experience with hypnosis, but I always write that script specific to the client on the spot and am always sure to consider the individual client before choosing what to use in a session. Most people will enter a trance state more easily on a return visit and will respond to shorter techniques. Clients who admittedly struggle to relax or who struggle with imagination through a particular sense will sometimes initially respond better to a different technique that may be faster or play to an alternate sense. If you decide to try any technique in an initial visit and it doesn't work, you can always just transition into a progressive relaxation which does work for most people.
What is your special focus in Hypnotherapy? (i.e., Phobia, Habit, Stress, Coaching) What do you love about it?
I specialize in trauma recovery and phobias. I love working with phobias because clients see major results so fast and generally feel empowered in other areas through the change they've created! I love assisting clients with trauma recovery because it is amazing to see someone finally understand their own worth and innate beauty and to start living through it! I feel like phobias are easy to be honest, yet the it means so much to those who need it so is equally satisfying. Trauma work is a little more complex and I enjoy the challenge.
Have you experienced burnout? If so, what methods do you use to spark your passion?
Only when I wasn't honoring my own boundaries, in which case, I just had to be honest with myself and my clients in order to shore them back up.
If you started your hypnosis business again, what things would you do differently?
I'm not sure. I'm pretty happy with how things are honestly. Maybe I would have started virtual sessions sooner, they do give more flexibility, but I still like in person sessions better.
